Surface welcomes their newest member to the team, Amy Truesdale, as accounts assistant.

Amy is following her dad’s footsteps and learning the ropes of the business, and who knows… one day she might even take over!

We are delighted to have Amy as a member of our team and look forward to seeing how she makes the role her own. We asked her a couple of questions, even though our founder and MD, Sean Truesdale, knows Amy very well… let’s introduce her to everyone else!

To get to know her better and what her new role entails. Read further to find out more.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I am a 24-year-old First-Class Honours History graduate from the University of Edinburgh and have recently returned home to Belfast after 9 months of travelling in Southeast Asia and Australia. I have previously worked in hospitality, retail, admin, and recruitment. My experience in retail, specifically working towards setting daily targets has given me the drive and determination to meet deadlines and go above and beyond to achieve the best results. This is a skillset needed in my accounting role as so much rides on meeting targets and deadlines to ensure the smooth running of the business. The client-facing experience I gained through working in recruitment has also helped greatly in my role at Surface as it enabled me to confidently communicate with our clients from my very first week. With recruitment being a very fast-paced and high-pressured industry, it also vastly improved my ability to multitask and manage an ever-changing priority list. This ability is necessary in my new role as well, being able to tap into my multitasking skills from previous work has really allowed me to dive right in and assist in many different areas of the business, as and when I’m needed.

What does a typical day look like for you at your new role?

My day-to-day responsibilities include managing the company’s accounts, invoices, wages, expenses, updating our accountancy software daily and assisting our directors with any other tasks. I also assist with our Sales and Marketing which is a side of the business I have great interest in and hope to become more involved in over time.

What motivates you at work?

I am a very conscientious and results driven person, so aiming to have a completed to do list by the end of the day is my main motivator. I also find the work ethic and passion of the whole Surface team, especially regarding our SAM software, very motivating as it drives me to ensure I am working equally as hard to support the company’s growth and continued success.

What led you down this career path?

During my Christmas and summer breaks from university I would work part time at Surface, helping with the administration and accounts. After returning from my travels, it seemed liked a great opportunity to resume my role on a full-time basis and expand my knowledge of the company and the industry. Although corrosion inspection and software doesn’t exactly follow on from a history degree, Surface is a family business and after some fatherly persuasion I decided to join the company full time!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love to travel to new places and hope to see as much of the world as possible! I spent time in the Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan islands in Thailand before travelling around Bali with my two best friends and had the most amazing time! We then visited Singapore for a few days where they then got their flight back home and I flew solo on to Sydney. I spent the next seven months in the beautiful Sydney where I was lucky enough to live right by Bondi beach. I worked for HAYS recruitment there and met the most amazing friends who made the other side of the world feel like a home. It was the best experience of my life! There is so much of the world I want to see but at the top of my bucket list would have to be Mexico and Italy, purely for the food!
